Steve Ditko (November 2, 1927 – June 29, 2018) was an American comics artist best known for co-creating Spider-Man and Doctor Strange with Stan Lee at Marvel Comics.[1] Born in Johnstown, Pennsylvania, to Ukrainian immigrant parents, he studied under Batman artist Jerry Robinson at the Cartoonists and Illustrators School before entering the comics industry in 1953.[2]
Marvel's Silver Age
Working alongside editor Stan Lee at Marvel in the early 1960s, Ditko helped drive the revival of superhero comics, co-creating Spider-Man in Amazing Fantasy #15 (1962) and Doctor Strange the following year, along with villains including Doctor Octopus and the Green Goblin.[1] He drew thirty-eight issues of The Amazing Spider-Man, developing a clean, moody, instantly recognizable artistic style that made him a fan favorite.[1] Ditko left Marvel in 1966 amid creative disagreements with Lee.[1]
Later career and legacy
After Marvel, Ditko created further characters for Charlton Comics and DC Comics, including the Blue Beetle and the Creeper, and developed Mr. A, reflecting his interest in Ayn Rand's Objectivist philosophy.[1] Known as an intensely private man who avoided interviews and public appearances, he officially retired from mainstream comics in 1998 while continuing to self-publish with small presses.[2] Ditko was inducted into the Jack Kirby Hall of Fame in 1990 and the Will Eisner Award Hall of Fame in 1994, and died on June 29, 2018, at age ninety.[1]
