Radha Comics was an Indian comics publication that operated in the late 1980s and early 1990s. Published by Radha Pocket Books, Meerut, India, the comics were primarily released in Hindi and were distributed on a monthly basis, with each set typically containing four to six comics. The publication became known for its diverse array of characters and stories, making a notable impact on the Indian comic book scene during its time.

Overview and Publication

Radha Comics was a significant publisher in the Indian comic book industry during the late 1980s and early 1990s. The comics were published exclusively in Hindi, making them accessible to a wide audience across the northern and central parts of India. Each monthly comic set featured a mix of superhero, action, and adventure stories, often inspired by popular Western comic book themes but with a distinct Indian twist.

Notable Series

The most successful and iconic series published by Radha Comics was Shaktiputra, which became one of the most beloved characters of the publication.

Shaktiputra

Shaktiputra was a superhero character, akin to RoboCop in both appearance and abilities. He was a crime-fighting cyborg whose brain was the brain of Inspector Vikram, a man who dedicated his life to becoming a half-robot. Created by the scientist Prof. Padmanabhan, Shaktiputra's body was made entirely of metal, except for his face, which was protected by a helmet. In addition to his robotic strength and enhanced abilities, Shaktiputra wielded weapons such as a sword, shield, and laser revolver, with his helmet providing special powers. The character’s storyline combined themes of science fiction, crime fighting, and transformation, resonating with Indian readers who were drawn to futuristic and action-packed tales.

Other Characters

Aside from Shaktiputra, Radha Comics featured a range of other unique characters, each contributing to the diversity of the comic's universe. Some of the most notable include:

  • Bauna Jasoos – A detective character known for solving mysteries.
  • Judo Queen Radha – A female superhero with martial arts skills.
  • Mahakaal – A character imbued with supernatural powers.
  • Rudraal – A warrior figure who embarked on epic adventures.
  • Janbaaz Jwala – A daring hero with fire-related abilities.
  • Chacha Chaubey – A humorous character often involved in comedic escapades.
  • Naagesh – A character based on the mystical powers of snakes.
  • Iron Man – Not to be confused with the Marvel Comics character, this version had a similar suit of armor but with an Indian cultural context.
  • Raja Jaani – A brave and noble character with royal ties.
  • Fantoosh – A comic character who brought humor and absurdity to the series.

Legacy

Though Radha Comics ceased publication after the early 1990s, its influence remains significant in the history of Indian comic books. The characters and stories published by Radha Comics, particularly Shaktiputra, were beloved by a generation of Indian readers and contributed to the rise of superhero comics in India. The unique blend of Indian culture with Western-inspired superhero themes set Radha Comics apart, and it remains fondly remembered by fans of vintage Indian comic books.
