The Avengers are a team of superheroes appearing in Marvel Comics, created by Stan Lee and Jack Kirby and first assembled in The Avengers #1, published July 2, 1963 — the same day as the debut of X-Men #1.[1]
Overview
The Avengers followed Marvel's own Fantastic Four as Lee and Kirby's second major team book, but took a different approach than DC Comics' Justice League by assembling characters whose own solo titles were anthology features or had been cancelled — Iron Man, Thor, Ant-Man, and the Hulk — rather than Marvel's biggest individual stars, giving the lineup an underdog appeal to readers.[1] Though a modest seller at first, the team eventually became the central property of Marvel Studios' film slate.[1]
