Adventure Time is an American animated fantasy-comedy series created by Pendleton Ward for Cartoon Network, following the adventures of a boy named Finn and his best friend and adoptive brother Jake, a dog with magical powers of shape-shifting, in the post-apocalyptic Land of Ooo.[1] The series premiered in April 2010 and concluded in 2018 after nine seasons and 142 half-hour episodes.[2]
Creation and development
Ward drew on his love of role-playing games when developing the series, pitching story ideas with his writing team—including Kent Osborne and Pat McHale—the way a group might develop a tabletop campaign. The show's eight-person board-artist team expanded on writer outlines, often taking the stories in directions Ward himself didn't anticipate, a looseness he embraced as part of the show's identity.[1]
Reception and legacy
Adventure Time earned widespread critical acclaim over its run, winning six Emmy Awards and a Peabody Award, and became known for its distinctive animation style, inventive worldbuilding, and unconventional humor.[2] Upon the announcement of its ending, Ward said he and the team were "really happy that it connected with an audience for so long."[2]
