Universal Press Syndicate

Major American newspaper syndicate founded 1970, later Andrews McMeel Syndication

Universal Press Syndicate was a major American newspaper syndicate founded in 1970 by Jim Andrews and John McMeel.[1]

History

The syndicate's first strip, Doonesbury, debuted in October 1970, and it went on to distribute Garfield, Calvin and Hobbes, For Better or For Worse, Cathy, Ziggy, The Far Side, and the Dear Abby advice column.[1] Andrews and McMeel also founded Andrews McMeel Publishing in 1973. Universal Press Syndicate merged with Uclick in 2009 to form Universal Uclick, now operating as Andrews McMeel Syndication.[1]
