Template:Short description
A close functional match to Wikipedia's Short description template, for articles imported or adapted from Wikipedia that already use it. It does two things:
- Sets the page's short description via
, MediaWiki core's
built-in magic word for this (not an extension) -- consumed by anything that reads the
shortdesc page property (search result snippets, some skins' subtitle areas,
the API). Caveat: this magic word's exact display behavior wasn't verified live —
it does not print anything inline in the article body on its own, by design, matching
Wikipedia's own short descriptions (invisible on desktop, used elsewhere).
- Also stores it as a queryable SMW property (
Has short description), so --
unlike on Wikipedia -- this wiki can actually surface it: e.g. in search result listings via The query description has an empty condition., or a skin could show it as an infobox subtitle. This part is CartoonWiki-specific, added because a purely invisible value felt like a wasted import on a wiki that already has SMW doing real work elsewhere (see Toons Mag integration and the citation/cross-reference templates for the same pattern).
Usage
{{Short description|American animator and illustrator}}
Place at the very top of the article, same as on Wikipedia. No second parameter (Wikipedia's
|noreplace) is implemented -- with only one source of short descriptions on
this wiki (no Wikidata fallback to defer to), there's nothing for it to not-replace.
Sets a one-line short description for the article, matching Wikipedia's Short description template.
| Parameter | Description | Type | Status | |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Short description | 1 | A brief, one-line description of the article's subject. | Line | required |
