Marvel Studios
More actions
Marvel Studios is an entertainment division of Walt Disney Studios that produces films and television series based on Marvel Comics characters, best known for creating the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU).[1]
History
Marvel Studios launched in 2005 to produce films using its own characters directly, rather than licensing them out. Because popular heroes such as Spider-Man and the X-Men were already licensed to other studios, Marvel Studios began with secondary characters including Iron Man and Thor — a strategy that proved successful and grew into the interconnected MCU franchise.[1] Producer Kevin Feige became a pivotal figure in the studio's growth, later negotiating an agreement with Sony that allowed Spider-Man to join the MCU starting with Captain America: Civil War.[1] Disney's 2019 acquisition of 20th Century Fox returned the X-Men and Fantastic Four film rights to Marvel Studios, expanding its crossover possibilities.[1]
Output
Beyond its theatrical slate, Marvel Studios expanded into television with series such as WandaVision that integrate directly with the broader MCU narrative, and produced the behind-the-scenes documentary series Marvel Studios: Assembled.[1]
