Judy (satirical magazine)

Victorian British satirical weekly (1867-1907), a rival to Punch and birthplace of Ally Sloper

Judy was a British satirical weekly magazine published from 1 May 1867 to 1907, launched as a rival to the established humor magazine Punch, its title punning on "Punch and Judy."[1]

History

Edited in its early years by Charles H. Ross (1869-1887) and owned by the Dalziel Brothers from 1872, Judy is historically significant chiefly as the birthplace of Ally Sloper, introduced on 14 August 1867 and widely considered one of the first recurring comic strip characters.[1] The magazine's artistic mainstay was cartoonist William Boucher, with other contributors including Marie Duval, A. B. Frost, and Adelaide Claxton.[1] It covered political cartoons on topics such as women's rights and the Russo-Turkish War alongside social and fashion commentary.[1] The magazine ceased publication in 1907 after forty years.[1]
