Frozen

The free encyclopedia of cartoons, comics, and animation.

Frozen is a 2013 American animated musical fantasy film produced by Walt Disney Animation Studios, directed by Chris Buck and Jennifer Lee and loosely inspired by Hans Christian Andersen's fairy tale The Snow Queen. It follows two royal sisters, Elsa, who possesses the power to create and control ice and snow, and Anna, who sets out to find her estranged sister after Elsa's powers accidentally plunge their kingdom into eternal winter.

Production

Disney had attempted adaptations of The Snow Queen for decades before settling on the version that became Frozen, ultimately reworking the story to center on the relationship between the two sisters rather than a traditional villain-driven plot. The film's songs, written by Kristen Anderson-Lopez and Robert Lopez, became central to its marketing and cultural reach, with the song "Let It Go" in particular achieving broad mainstream popularity well beyond the film's initial audience.

Reception and legacy

Frozen was a major critical and commercial success, becoming one of the highest-grossing animated films of its era and winning the Academy Award for Best Animated Feature. Its popularity led to a sequel, stage adaptation, and an extensive range of licensed media, and it is frequently cited as a landmark example of 21st-century Disney animation balancing traditional fairy-tale storytelling with revisionist, character-driven themes.
