Don Markstein's Toonopedia

Don Markstein's Toonopedia was an online encyclopedia of comic strip, comic book, and animated cartoon characters created by comics and animation historian Donald David Markstein (1947-2012).

Creator

Markstein was a comic book writer and animation historian who also co-edited Comics Revue with Rick Norwood and co-founded Apatoons, an amateur press association for animation enthusiasts, with his wife GiGi Dane in 1981.

Scope and reputation

Toonopedia became an indispensable online reference for accurate information on characters and creators across comic strips, comic books, and animation, and was widely consulted by both fans and professionals in the field. Colleagues described Markstein as a rare expert scholar whose work helped establish comics and animation fandom as a serious subject of research well before digital fan communities became widespread.
