Charles H. Ross

British writer and cartoonist, creator of Ally Sloper (1835-1897)

Charles Henry Ross (1835 - 12 October 1897) was a British writer and cartoonist who created the character Ally Sloper for the satirical magazine Judy in 1867.[1]

Career

As Ross had limited drawing skill, his wife, working under the pen name Marie Duval, inked the strip for him and later took over the artwork entirely.[1] Ally Sloper is considered by many comics historians to be the first British comic strip character.[1] Ross edited Judy from 1869 to 1887.[2]

Legacy

Ross and Duval later sold the rights to the character to Judy's proprietors, and publisher Gilbert Dalziel launched a dedicated spin-off title, Ally Sloper's Half Holiday, in 1884, with artist William G. Baxter taking over the strip's art.[1]
