Asphalt Watches is a 2013 Canadian animated film directed by Ontario-based filmmakers Shayne Ehman and Seth Scriver.[1] Their eight-day cross-country journey eventually became an eight-year animation project using rudimentary hand-drawn Flash animation, drawing inspiration from R. Crumb, Ren & Stimpy, vintage video games, Surrealism, and painter Philip Guston.[1]
Plot
The film follows two characters, Skeleton Hat and Bucktooth Cloud, on a cross-Canada road trip beginning in Chilliwack, British Columbia, incorporating actual encounters from the filmmakers' 2000 journey through "a consumerist wasteland, littered with satirically mangled global corporate logos."[1] The narrative is described as "comically bizarre, darkly grotesque and, in the end, surprisingly sweet," blending lyrical fantasy sequences with darker encounters.[1]
Reception
The film won Best Canadian First Feature at the Toronto International Film Festival.[1]
