CartoonWiki is a reference work for cartoons, comics and animation — the people who draw them, the strips, shows, magazines and studios behind them, and the history of the medium itself. It is part of the Toons Mag network, the multilingual cartoon and editorial-cartooning platform founded in 2009 by cartoonist Arifur Rahman and based in Drøbak, Norway.
What's actually here
1,111 articles and 79,697 pages, 85,912 edits from 1,084 registered contributors, backed by 390 image scans — these are live counts, not a figure typed in once and left to go stale.
Scope
Four kinds of article, browsable from the Main Page's discipline and era lanes:
- People — cartoonists, illustrators, animators and caricaturists, with
career, style and notable-work sections.
- Works — strips, comics, animated series and films, with episode and
issue guides where the sourcing supports them.
- Publications and studios — the magazines, syndicates and production
houses that carried the work, like Punch and Toons Mag itself.
- Technique and history — animation methods, and
eras such as the Golden and Silver Ages of American comics.
Browse by discipline — editorial cartoons, comics & strips, caricature, animation, gag cartoons — or by era, from before 1900 to today.
Featured today
The hero box on the Main Page rotates on its own through a curated set of articles, advancing to a new one every week with no manual editing — see Category:Featured cartoons for the full list so far.
How an article is built
Six rules, laid out in full at CartoonWiki:Style manual: say what the subject is in the first sentence, keep dates in the infobox rather than the prose, credit every image, prefer a short sourced article to a long unsourced one, use the house section headings, and categorise — the skin's status chips, breadcrumbs and browse pages are all read straight from categories, so an uncategorised article is effectively invisible.
Where the images come from
Every scan or photograph on CartoonWiki is expected to carry a rights record —
who holds the right, how we know, and under what terms it's shown here. The
full standard, including what counts as evidence and how to record it with
, is at CartoonWiki:Rights primer. A file
missing that evidence is flagged, not deleted on sight — see
Category:Files with no rights evidence.
